ThePhotoMentor concept is simple. We gather together online as a small group to Learn; Share; Critique; Discuss all things photo!
Our classes and sessions are easy-going, with a fun casual atmosphere. There are no “egos”, competition nor judgement. We all learn collectively and assist others along the way. There is no such thing as a dumb question! Only constructive answers and guidance.
Introductory Classes
Go beyond shooting snap shots and learn more about the Creative Controls with a real camera. These classes are not designed for cell phone photography, but for basic Digital SLR or Digital Mirror-less cameras.
Moving beyond cell phones!
With our Intro Classes, we expect little more than knowing how to turn on the power to your camera. We will assist you in understanding settings; concepts; creative controls; and other often baffling “photo lingo” and make it understandable and simple. Let’s get the most out of your camera and lead to some creative image making.
In the Intro Classes (typically a 6-session course) you will learn to control the camera to get it to do what you want it to.
Typically our classes and content have flexibility to cater to the individuals in the class. Often we go on tangents based upon questions and suggestions in the class.
Here is a framework for what to expect in the Intro Class:
Week 1: Light & Camera Basics
Week 2: Camera Functions
Week 3: Shutter Speed Priority
Week 4: Aperture Priority
Week 5: Design & Composition
Week 6: Principles of Design
We often will assign a “homework” shooting exercise to practice on your own what we discussed in class. Normally we do some Creative Critique of the homework to give some praise and encouragement!
Our overall goal is to get you inspired by photography!
A new Intro Class will be starting in January, 2024.
Intermediate / Advanced Sessions
Our Intermediate / Advanced sessions expect some basic understanding of how your camera works and the exposure controls. We don’t expect you to be an expert, but not a beginner.
Completing the Intro Classes is the perfect foundation for the Intermediate/Advanced Sessions.
We explore and diverse array of photographic skills and techniques, a lot is guided by the participants requests.
We explore more Exposure Skills while expanding your Creativity.
Design and Composition is a key theme in the Int/Adv sessions. We explore how to make Art over snapshots. The Homework leading to more in-depth Creative Critique will push your artistic abilities.
We will learn at the pace of the group and keep going and going!
The Int/Adv sessions have no “set” number of classes. We will continue as a group as long as the participants wish. The sessions might run for 6 months, a year or longer. Our present group has been gathering each month for two-years!
We encourage the group to work together and to help challenge each other. The social component is important as with the Intro Classes, a fun and friendly learning environment is our goal.
The Int/Adv sessions will guide you through camera knowledge to creative expression.
We have a staple of diverse and experienced Guest Mentors who will occasionally lead the group sessions on more specialized topics, from Software to Creative Lighting to unique Subject Matter such as Sports/Concerts/Weddings/Portraits/Studio etc.
A new Int/Adv session is planned for late February, 2024.
